Handling a Renovation When You Have Kids

Keep in mind that purchasing a new, turn-key property isn’t the only way to get the home of your dreams; renovating your current property, or considering a fixer-upper with potential can be an effective way to achieve the look you’re going for. However, renovations aren’t exactly an easy undertaking, and doing so with kids in tow can add to an already draining process.

Here are some tips and tricks to help parents keep stress levels down during a major renovation project.

Take Safety Precautions

kids safety

As a parent, you’re constantly on high alert for anything that could be a potential threat to your child’s safety, and a home renovation is no different. For this reason, it is important to hire a contractor who has experience working with kids. There may be certain precautions or steps that need to be taken, that you may not have thought of, that they may be able to guide you through, such as keeping potentially hazardous tools or materials out of reach. Having a more experienced contractor can help put your mind at ease.

Get Your Kids Involved

There are a few different ways that you can get your kids involved in the renovation process. For example, while it is ideal to temporarily relocate during your renovation, if that is not an option, try to make a game out of certain aspects, such as having an indoor picnic if your kitchen is unusable. By seizing the opportunity to make fun memories with your kids, you’ll be able to distract them from the chaos of the renovation taking place around them.

Another way to get kids excited about your renovations is making them a part of the project itself. Whether you are asking for their input on what colours they would like in their rooms or letting them paint small amounts, making kids feel like they are a part of the project will make it that much more exciting and it can help keep you from having to worry about disrupting their routine.

Self-Care During a Renovation

One of the most challenging, yet important, things that parents need to do during a renovation is to manage their stress levels. It is important to make sure that you make time for yourself and your family, even in the midst of a project.

Little things like preparing nice meals or planning family adventures can be key to keeping you sane during this hectic period. It is also important that you ask for help if you need it. Whether you are asking friends or family for a hand getting your kids out of the house for a few hours while the contractors work on demolition, or you just need somewhere to make a home-cooked meal for your family, trying to do it all yourself can lead to additional, unnecessary stress.

Avoid Damage, When Work is Completed

When all is said and done, parents with young children may be concerned their little one could pose potential damage to their newly-renovated spaces. For this reason, it can be smart to prioritize low-traffic areas that your kids don’t frequent, such as guest bedroom and bathrooms, and focus on other rooms when they’re older.

By protecting these areas from continuous wear and tear, you’re also helping to protect your investment; being strategic in the way that you renovate will keep you from stressing about any potential damage or loss in value.

While renovating with children can be a bit more complicated and a lot more stressful, it is well worth the effort. Be sure to keep things like self-care and safety in mind in order to alleviate some of the stress. It’s a great way to turn any piece of real estate – whether Toronto townhouses, condos, or detached houses – into the perfect space to raise your family.
